Africare announces Major Donor Trip 2009: Mali, Senegal and Ghana

 


Washington, DC November 3, 2008 -- Africare President, Julius E. Coles, released on Monday the anticipated travel destinations for the 2009 Africare Major Donor Trip. The two-week trip will include stops in Mali, Senegal, and Ghana, for tours of historic landmarks and Africare development projects in water, food security, and health & HIV/AIDS. For the first time, interested donors will be able to submit on-line bids to secure their seat on the 2009 trip. Five seats will be auctioned off to the highest bidders beginning November 3rd, 2008. The closing date for all bids is December 1st, 2008. Bids can be submitted on-line to the Department of Development & Marketing.

BRIEF BACKGROUND: Each year, President Coles leads a delegation of Africare's donors on a two-week tour of the African continent, making stops at some of Africa's most treasured destinations and visits to Africare project sites to experience "first hand" what Africare is doing on the ground to improve the quality of life for the people in Africa. The 2008 Major Donor Trip led a delegation of six donors to East and Southern Africa, making stops in South Africa, Uganda and Tanzania. 2009 Major Donor Trip Itinerary:

This highly recommended tour for the first-time visitor to the African Continent offers a unique perspective of three West African countries coupled with an opportunity to visit three of Africare’s humanitarian projects.  This particular two-week tour offers many cultural and educational opportunities to connect you with the beauty and history of West Africa and encourage investments in humanitarian development projects on the African Continent. 

Tourism Highlights of your Africare Donor Trip in Mali, Senegal, and Ghana include:

Tour Highlights in Senegal: City Tour of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and Pilgrimage to Goree Island to see the “Slave House and Door of No Return.”  Also Bird Sanctuary in Saint Louis.

Tour Highlights in Mali: City Tour of Bamako, the capital city of Mali, to view the spectacular mud-built mosques, which are architectural wonders, and the Fabled City of Timbuktu, the “university center” of ancient Africa. 

Tour Highlights in Ghana: City Tour of Accra, the capital city of Ghana, and Pilgrimage to Cape Coast and Elmina Slave Castles and Slave Dungeons.  Also Optional Tour of Spectacular Rain Forest Canopy in Kakum National Park.

How do I secure my seat on the 2009 Major Donor Trip?

 

The 2009 Major Donor Trip will be auctioned off to the five highest bidders beginning November 3rd, 2008. The opening bid is at $16,000 and includes first class accommodations, business class airfare, guided tours and meals. (Package details above)

Auction Open Date: November 3, 2008

Auction Close Date: December 1, 2008 ~ 12PM EST

Payment Deadline: December 5, 2008
(no exceptions)


All bids should be submitted with your name, contact information (including daytime telephone, mailing address, and e-mail address) to Africare's Department of Development & Marketing at development@africare.org.

A confirmation of your bid will be sent via e-mail shortly following submission. On December 1st, the five highest bidders will be notified and invoiced to secure their seats on the trip. In the event that a bid winner does not successfully submit payment, the seat will be awarded to the next highest bidder.

Please note, all bids are considered FINAL. You will be invoiced upon confirmation of winning one of the auctioned seats for the 2009 Major Donor Trip.

On-line bidding with Africare is simple as 1, 2, 3:

1) Compose an e-mail including your name, mailing address, e-mail address, and daytime telephone number.

2) Specify the total dollar amount you are willing to pay for a seat on the 2009 Major Donor Trip. ( NOTE: Bids for multiple seats are welcome. Starting bid is at $16,000/ per seat)

3) Submit your bid to development@africare.org by noon on December 1st, 2008.

You will be notified by close of business December 1st of the auction results. If you are an auction winner, you will have until December 5, 2008 to submit payment.


Things to consider before placing your bid:

  • Timing: Please insure that you are available for travel between January 22nd and February 3, 2009, and that you can submit total payment for your seat by Friday December 5, 2008.

  • Passports: Please ensure that your US Passport is up-to-date (more than six months from expiration date and that it has at least five blank pages)

  • Visa's: Please ensure that you have a total of six (6) passport sized photographs available for Visa's
  • Immunizations: Consult with your treating physician about the Yellow Fever Vacine and other important immunizations (i.e. Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Polio, etc.) needed for travel in West Africa, as well as an anti-malaria prescription.
