WASHINGTON, June 19, 2006—Africare's Kevin Lowther will be on WUSA Channel 9 News at 9am on Monday, June 19, discussing how organizations and communities in Southern Africa are addressing the needs of orphans and other vulnerable children. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has had a severe impact on the people in Southern Africa, decimating households and leaving numerous children without parents to care for them. Africare was one of the earliest responders to HIV/AIDS on the continent of Africa - dating back to 1987 - and has worked to provide not only economic solutions, but also support for the physical and emotional needs of both children and caregivers involved. Africare's approach has been to support ways for children affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic to be cared for by their extended family in order to maintain some sense of a family unit. Kevin will discuss Africare's approach and current programs, such as schools, peer education, and COPE Clubs ("COPE" stands for Community Based Orphan Care, Protection and Empowerment).
